Although turnout was dismal during the elections Saturday (March 23) for parish and state central committees of the Democratic Party, several spirited competitions took place. Voters elected some bright new faces, and some powerful incumbents were returned to office.
U.S. Rep. Troy Carter put together a slate of old and new contenders in every City Council district for his True Blue ballot and enjoyed a high rate of success. The new statewide progressive organization Blue Reboot had less success for its slate of candidates.
Three candidates who were listed on Blue Reboot’s website – former U.S. Senate candidate Syrita Steib, Andrea Manuel and attorney Barry Ranshi – contacted the group’s leadership prior to the election asking to have their names removed. In his email, Ranshi, ran unopposed for the Democratic State Central Committee, Representative District 79, Office B, in North Kenner, said: “I qualified without an opponent at the behest of no one.” Nineteen of the Blue Reboot contenders won and 46 lost. Community activist Justin Brown of the nonprofit Empower You NOLA said of Blue Reboot.
