City Planning Commission approves Italian restaurant on Magazine Street

The City Planning Commission approved Creole Cuisine Restaurant Concepts’ latest venture on Magazine Street. An Italian-themed restaurant and bar with balcony service could inhabit the former space of their short-lived Bayou Burger & Sports Co. concept on the corner of Magazine and Pleasant streets. A zoning request by the building’s owner, T.H.P of New Orleans, and the restaurant’s owner, Creole Cuisine Restaurant Concepts, was unanimously approved by the Planning Commission, minus one absent vote. The commissioners recommended permitting a standard restaurant in the HU-B1 neighborhood business district and the Magazine Street Use Restriction Overlay District.

Juan’s Flying Burrito to land on Oak Street in August

Juan’s Flying Burrito, the Mexican restaurant known for its massive burritos and “fly dranks,” is opening a new location at 8140 Oak St in August. The spot is the former home of Live Oak Café, which closed in May due to the pandemic and Hurricane Ida struggles. Since 1997, Juan’s Flying Burrito has been a favorite casual spot known for its burritos, nachos, quesadillas, tacos and other Mexican-inspired fare served in a neighborhood-friendly atmosphere.

The “Creole taqueria” currently boasts three locations in New Orleans: in the Lower Garden District at 2018 Magazine St., the Central Business District at 515 Baronne St., and Mid-City at 4724 S. Carrollton Ave. Another location, further Uptown at 5538 Magazine St., closed in May after five years, citing rent increases and lease changes.

Co-owners Jay Morris and Warren Chapoton also recently opened a location in Pensacola. According to Morris, the space on Oak Street is currently undergoing a renovation that will make its style more aligned with Juan’s atmosphere.

Viewpoint: Sheriff Susan Hutson faces rocky road ahead

With two unexpected deaths in less than a week and an ongoing staffing crisis that — in her own words — has “destabilized” the Orleans Justice Center, Sheriff Susan Hutson must have quickly realized that her honeymoon was ending sooner than expected. All new sheriffs get tested by their deputies and inmates (let’s not be so naïve to refer to them as “residents”) to gauge the rules. Hutson was no different. The inmates searched for a weak spot — in this instance not enough staff on the tiers — and exploited it. During the campaign, Hutson pounded on the concepts of care, custody and control.

Police blotter: Three vehicles stolen Uptown in 12 hours, and one carjacking attempt thwarted

An armed burglary, a carjacking, a vehicle theft and an attempted carjacking were reported recently in Uptown neighborhoods. At about 3 a.m., the gunmen forced their way into a home in the 3000 block of Loyola Avenue and threatened the two residents, a 39-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man. They demanded the woman turn over her car keys, which she did. The fled in her vehicle, which was later recovered.
