Purse snatched from woman, 78, as she unlocked her door on Milan

A purse was snatched from a 78-year-old woman Wednesday afternoon as she was entering her home in the Milan neighborhood, the New Orleans Police Department reported.

The woman was approached while unlocking her front door in the 1800 block of Milan Street, near Baronne, about 12:30 p.m. on April 3. A man grabbed her purse and fled north on Milan Street on a bicycle.

Scandinavian Jazz Church building set for redevelopment as wellness center

One-hundred and twelve years as a religious hub for the Norwegian community makes a space on Prytania Street ideal for yoga classes, meditation and water aerobics, its new owners told residents of the Lower Garden District on Wednesday.

If all goes as planned, the site of the former Scandinavian Jazz Church — previously called the Norwegian Seamen’s Church — will be transformed into a wellness center called the Santosa Center for Healthy Living by the fall of 2020. The property’s owners say the development will be a unique, all-inclusive wellness center not found anywhere else in New Orleans.

Music and art will take over Freret Street for fest on Saturday

On Saturday (March 26), the Freret Street Festival will help kick off the return of festival season in New Orleans. The  seven-block street party features live music on three stages (see the lineup below), a food court featuring top local chefs (with picnic seating at every intersection), more than 200 arts and crafts vendors, a kids’ area, and slightly used but immensely adorable dogs and cats up for adoption.  

There’s no admission charge for the festival, which can be found along Freret between Napoleon Avenue and Valmont Street. Free parking is available in a nearby lot on the corner of Magnolia and Cadiz streets. The festival can also be reached by public transit.

Uptown Sounds is about the music, and the experience

It was slightly windy and rainy, but that didn’t stop the music of Uptown Sounds battle of the bands from sizzling. The event at Evans Park in the Freret neighborhood on Sunday, March 31, gave eight bands the chance to take the stage at the festival-style event.

The winner was chosen by audience vote. Doctors, a dark-pop band, received a cash prize and a spot on the lineup for Freret Street Festival on Saturday (3:45 on Alder Hotel Stage at Valence Street).

Photos: Annual boil celebrates musician’s legacy

On Sunday, people gathered in the 8300 block of Oak street, outside of the Maple Leaf Bar to celebrate the legacy of musician and chef Jamie Galloway with live music from the Hundred and One Runners, Billy Iuso, Papa Malie and more — plus crawfish from Seither’s Seafood and Clesi’s Catering. The event serves as a benefit for the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic.
