On Sunday, people gathered in the 8300 block of Oak street, outside of the Maple Leaf Bar to celebrate the legacy of musician and chef Jamie Galloway with live music from the Hundred and One Runners, Billy Iuso, Papa Malie and more — plus crawfish from Seither’s Seafood and Clesi’s Catering. The event serves as a benefit for the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic.

Former principal returns to Lusher as board member

Lusher’s former middle school principal is now leading the charter school in a new role as the newest member of its governing board, officials said.

Brenda Bourne — who stepped down as principal in 2014 after working at Lusher since 1991 — was introduced March 23 as the newest member of the school’s governing board.

Loyola music students produce battle of the bands this Sunday

Six bands will battle for a spot at the Freret Street Festival at a college student-produced music festival this weekend. “Uptown Sound” will bring music, food trucks, and more to Evans Playground (5100 Lasalle Street) this Sunday, March 31.

The “battle of the bands” festival is produced by a committee of dedicated music industry young professionals from Loyola University New Orleans. The goal of the event is to bring together the Uptown college community with the local residents for an energetic fun-filled day of entertainment.

Old Freret is alive and well inside this barber shop

People line the walls of Dennis’ Barber Shop. On one side, framing the long mirror running its length, there are pictures, some faded, mixed in with an assortment of clippings — an old Times-Picayune cover of Mardi Gras Indians, a Fortier High School flag. On the opposite side, they rotate through a litany of chairs, none of which stay empty for long.

“People will get a hair cut, get up and sit back down,” said Stan Norwood, a longtime barber at the shop, as he put the finishing touches on Beth Oubre’s hair. Oubre has come to the shop every Wednesday for the past 20 years.

NOPD reports fatal shooting in the Garden District

The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a homicide in the Garden District that occurred Wednesday evening, police reported.

Officers received a call of shots fired in the 1500 block of Freret Street in Central City at about 4:42 p.m. A silver sedan was reported to be driving on Terpsichore Street and shooting in the block.

Danae Columbus: Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser brings Louisiana issues into national spotlight

While most state officials are spending this week preparing for the upcoming legislative session, yesterday Louisiana’s 54th Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser participated in a White House roundtable in Washington, D.C., on the nation’s economy and trade led by National Economic Council Director and Deputy Assistant to the President Larry Kudlow.

He attended a dinner at the Embassy of Canada where he discussed cultural similarities and additional air-travel opportunities. Today he is moderating a panel on changes to veterans’ health care and will be meeting privately with the ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany for more tourism talks.
