Water meter covers turned into public art on Uptown sidewalks

By Sue Strachan, Uptown Messenger

Most art is not supposed to be stepped on. But for LeLuna, this artist’s canvas is unexpectedly underfoot: Sewage & Water Board of New Orleans meter covers.

The water meter covers are painted with short, often politically universal messages, such as “Make Art Not War,” “Erase Hate,” “Love Me Tender.” Others have a local focus, such as “Copper is Currency” with the tagline, “Strip copper, fight gentrification” or an image of the city’s unofficial mascot, the flying cockroach.

A second community meeting was held Thursday for the project at 3520 Dryades St., which is seeking permission to have fewer parking spots and fewer loading docks than required by zoning regulations. Regulations require 154 parking spaces and two loading docks. The current plans for the new school building have 40 parking spaces and one loading dock.

S&WB: Water is restored Uptown, but boil water advisory is still in effect

The Sewerage & Water Board announced Sunday morning that water service was returned to the Uptown areas affected by the outage. The water main on South Johnson has been repaired and the valves reopened, the utility stated.

A boil water advisory is still in effect for two areas of Uptown, shown below. Water quality testing has begun, it announced at about 9 a.m., and could take up to 24 hours. In consultation with the Louisiana Department of Health, the S&WB is still testing water quality samples from the affected areas.
