Day of the Dead event includes Frida Kahlo costume contest at Casa Borrega

Casa Borrega in Central City is hosting its sixth annual Day of the Dead and first Frida Kahlo costume contest on Friday, Nov. 2, from 7 to 11 p.m.

The event features an altar by Hugo Montero, who has been creating Day of the Dead altars since the early 1990s in New Orleans. This year’s altar is dedicated to Anthony Bordain.

The community is invited to bring photos of their loved ones who have died in the last year to place on the altar. The installation is open to the public during business hours.

Scandinavian Jazz Church to hold final Christmas festival

After 112 years in New Orleans, the Scandinavian Jazz Church on Prytania Street will close and be sold at the end of the year, but not before holding its final annual Christmas festival this weekend.

The festival features homemade Scandinavian food, handmade crafts, live music, a raffle and silent auction, and cooking demonstrations.

Tulane awarded $2.3 million to study impact of blight on violence in New Orleans

Can cleaning vacant lots cause a chain of events that curbs child abuse or stops a teen from falling victim to violence?

That’s the provocative question behind a new Tulane University research project to study whether maintaining vacant lots and fixing up blighted properties in high-crime areas reduces incidents of youth and family violence. The National Institutes of Health awarded Tulane a $2.3 million grant to test the theory in New Orleans.

NOPD offers safety tips, community Trick-or-Treating at local District stations

The NOPD coordinated with Walgreens again this year to do a candy giveaway and to make sure kids have a safe and boo-tiful Halloween.

Dozens of local Walgreen stores donated over 400 bags of candy to the New Orleans Police Department to allow neighborhood kids to interact with their local police officers on Halloween.

Superintendent Michael Chief Harrison is encouraging community members, parents or guardians to stop by their local district station to allow kids to trick-or-treat in a safe environment with officers.
