Where to find St. Joseph’s altars Uptown

The St. Joseph’s altar is one of those Catholic traditions, in this case a Sicilian Catholic tradition, that, through some very creative adaption, south Louisiana has made its own. Among all the breads and cakes shaped into religious symbols — a monstrance, chalice, cross, heart, dove, Bible — it’s not unusual to find an alligator. A Lenten symbol, perhaps.

Single Men to second-line through Central City on Super Sunday

The Single Men Social Aid and Pleasure Club second-line on Sunday, March 17, starts in Mid-City and ends in Milan, on a route that is likely to get the parade to Central City about the time the Mardi Gras Indians are finishing their Super Sunday procession. The club’s schedule has them meeting up with the 9th Ward Hunters tribe at the Purple Rain bar on Saratoga Street. The second-line will feature the Stooges Brass Band.

New face-makeup designs proposed for Zulu parade

A group of New Orleans artists have imagined new face-makeup designs for riders in the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club’s parade to replace the group’s traditional blackface that hearkens back to racist minstrelsy displays, activists said Monday night at a panel discussion about the issue.

Hosted in partnership with the New Orleans Recreation Development (NORD) Commission, Hike Fest will celebrate the Lafitte Greenway with an all-day lineup of live music featuring Corey Henry & the Treme Funktet, acclaimed singer Robin Barnes, TBC Brass Band, Cajun band Michot’s Melody Makers with members of Lost Bayou Ramblers, Funk Griot, and the Trombone Shorty Music Academy.
