Police blotter: Two cars and a backpack stolen on Uptown streets

A man and woman were carjacked Monday night on Magazine Street and two men were robbed in separate incidents Sunday night on South Claiborne Avenue, the New Orleans Police Department reported. The carjacking occurred Monday (May 24) in the 2200 block of Magazine Street, near Jackson Avenue. The victims were a man, 53, and a woman, 23. The 53-year-old was in a Toyota Camry at about 9:30 p.m. when a man entered the car through driver’s door while another man punched him in face. The man was thrown out of the driver’s seat, and the two carjackers drove away in the victims’ white 2014 Toyota Camry with Louisiana license plate YMB 725.

Loyola plans to welcome a record number of freshmen, as students and local residents brace for a potential housing shortage

On-campus housing has become a concern for Loyola University students as an influx of freshmen await the fall semester. 

The university is gaining a larger-than-normal freshman class for the fall 2021 semester, which may cause a problem for upperclassmen at Loyola New Orleans and for residents in the surrounding neighborhoods. 

Police blotter: Armed robbery in Lower Garden District, shooting in the Irish Channel

The New Orleans Police Department has reported an armed robbery in the Lower Garden District and a shooting in the Irish Channel. A woman was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday (May 19) night. The 22-year-old victim was in the 900 block of Race Street at 9:30 p.m. when she was approached by a man carrying a rifle. He demanded her money, and she complied. A 44-year-old woman was injured in a shooting early Tuesday (May 18) in the 3300 block of Chippewa Street.

NOPD to hold sobriety check Thursday and Friday

The NOPD’s Traffic Division has planned a sobriety checkpoint for an undisclosed location in New Orleans. The checkpoint will be in operation from 9 p.m. on Thursday (May 20) through Friday (May 21) at 5 a.m.
During this time, motorists will experience minimal delays at the checkpoint and should have the proper documentation, such as proof of vehicle insurance and driver’s license, available if requested by officers.
