Man arrested in early-morning armed robbery

A 57-year-old Uptown man was awoken early Tuesday by a man demanding cash, the New Orleans Police Department reported.

Anthony Love, 54, was arrested in the robbery. Police say he entered the victim’s home at about 5:30 a.m. and threatened to stab him with a kitchen knife.

NOLA Vegan Café: Former social worker brings plant-based cuisine to Leonidas

At the corner of Leonidas and Spruce sits the Community Commitment Education Center, a public space for neighborhood engagement, summer programs for children, and now a plant-based restaurant. Formerly Stella’s Coffee House, the kitchen space at 1923 Leonidas St. is now officially home to NOLA Vegan Café, which opens today, Oct. 1.

The café is the work of Uptown’s Sonya Brown, a social worker and chef known for her vegan popups. Earlier this year, she met Nicole Bouie, CEO and director of the center, who also has a social work background.

‘We’re in it for people to read comics’: Crescent City Comics celebrates 10-year anniversary

Fans assembled at Crescent City Comics in the Freret neighborhood on Saturday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the comic book store’s rebirth after Hurricane Katrina.

It wasn’t always clear that the store would make it this far. It opened in Gentilly in 1994, but when the storm hit in 2005, the shop lost much of its stock to flooding. It stayed shuttered for the next four years.
