The woman who drowned in Audubon Park had left her family behind in Massachusetts a year ago and suffered untreated mental illness, said the Orleans Parish Coroner. Meanwhile, the woman who was fatally shot last weekend on Jackson Avenue has yet to be identified, officials said.
The woman whose body was pulled from the Audubon Park lagoon on Monday, Oct. 10, was identified as 53-year-old Sheila Freedman, said Orleans Parish Coroner Jeffrey Rouse’s office.
“She was homeless and suffering from untreated mental illness in New Orleans,” according to a statement from Rouse’s office. “She arrived here from Massachusetts, having left behind a husband and two children approximately a year ago.”Rouse’s office has yet to release the identity of a woman in her late 30s who was killed Saturday, Oct. 15, near Jackson Avenue and Clara Street in Central City, however. She was shot to the head and pronounced dead at the scene shortly after gunfire was reported around 10:42 a.m. that day.
