A 22-year-old Warren Easton alumna and recent Dillard University graduate about to start work as a medical technician was shot to death Saturday on Clio Street as the city’s first murder victim of the year, New Orleans police said.

Myeisha McDaniels was driven to the hospital in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound around 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, and was pronounced dead there, police said at the time. Investigators then determined that she had been shot in the 3700 block of Clio Street (just off South Broad and Earhart streets near the former B.W. Cooper housing projects), according to a NOPD report.

McDaniels was committed to using her education to launch a career in the medical field, relatives at a memorial for her said in an article by Della Hasselle for The Advocate. Cousins said McDaniels had been in touch with them shortly before going to dinner with a boyfriend that night, and described it as “unthinkable that McDaniels, a religious young woman who wanted to spend her life helping people, would find herself in a situation that ended in her violent death,” Hasselle writes.

Anyone with information is urged to call the NOPD homicide division to speak to Detective Drew Deacon at 658-5300, or call CrimeStoppers at 822-1111.
