Central St. Matthew United Church of Christ is hosting a prayer vigil this evening to seek healing for the people of the Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston and for the United States as a whole following this week’s massacre of nine people there.

The vigil, hosted by the New Orleans Association of United Church of Christ, begins at 5 p.m. today (Sunday, June 21) at the church at 1333 South Carrollton Ave.

“Let us join together to pray for the people of Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and for the racial divide that exists in our country today,” according to an announcement from the church. “The United Church of Christ is progressive denomination that welcomes all people regardless of race, orientation, or background. People of all denominations and faiths are welcomed and encouraged to attend.”
