The National Weather Service is warning New Orleans that temperatures are expected to sink below freezing Wednesday evening through Thursday morning, making for the coldest night since last winter.
“An arctic airmass will push into the northern and high plains this evening and by late Wednesday morning will already be well into portions of the lower Mississippi valley,” the NWS New Orleans office wrote in a 2 p.m. forecast. “Very cold and dry air will continue to surge into the region through Wednesday afternoon and night.”
Residents on the South shore should ensure that pets have adequate shelter and protect sensitive plants, meteorologists said.
The freeze watch will remain in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday.
