After an alleged heroin dealer whom police say was operating at one of the Irish Channel’s most notoriously violent corners was arrested last week and released from jail a day later, he is now back in jail again on a $500,000 bond following his indictment by a grand jury, documents show.

Ernest Gaskin Jr., 59, is charged with one count of possession of more than 28 grams of heroin and one count of distribution of heroin, according to an indictment filed Wednesday. His bond was set at $250,000 on each count — for a total of $500,000 — and his arraignment is set for Monday morning in Judge Ben Willard’s courtroom.

Gaskin remains in jail since he was re-booked Wednesday, in contrast to his initial arrest July 29. Initially, his bond was set at $19,500 on the same charges, and Irish Channel residents quickly complained that he was back at the corner of Washington and Annunciation the following morning.

Police, too, had decried Gaskin’s speedy release, but this week applauded his indictment.

“As you can see we have worked closely with the residents during this investigation,” NOPD Sixth District Commander Bob Bardy said in an email to neighborhood groups, following Gaskin’s return to jail. “The effort was truly community and police coming together.”
