A man who fired several gunshots from inside a Napoleon Avenue home when police tried to approach surrendered peacefully after a two-hour standoff, New Orleans police said.

Officers were called to a disturbance in the 1300 block of Napoleon Avenue (near Perrier Street) around 4 a.m., and arrived to find a woman outside the house, said NOPD Officer Garry Flot, a departmental spokesman. The woman told police that a man was still inside, but when they approached, he refused to come out, Flot said.

The officers then heard several gunshots from inside, so they called in the SWAT team, Flot said.

The man — identified as Elmer Anweiler, 43 — surrendered peacefully around 6 a.m., Flot said.

No one else was inside the home, and no one was injured, Flot said.

  1. If there were gunshots, it doesn’t sound “peacefully”.
