A woman was shot to death Monday afternoon on a Central City street, New Orleans police said, making her the second woman killed by gunfire in the neighborhood in as many days.
Police found the woman — later identified as Raquel Gillard, 38, according to Naomi Martin of The Times-Picayune — lying in the intersection of South Liberty and Josephine streets around 2 p.m., suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, according to a NOPD news release. She was taken to the hospital, but died there shortly afterward.
Late Saturday night, 22-year-old Lanisha Scott was hit in the head by gunfire as she rode in a vehicle on Washington near Dryades, and she died Sunday morning. That shooting was only a few blocks away from Monday’s crime scene.
The two shootings in Central City follow nearly four months without a homicide in the Central City area — the last time someone was killed in the neighborhood (from South Claiborne to St. Charles between Louisiana Avenue and the Pontchartrain Expressway) was Nov. 18, according to the city’s crime maps.
