A 9-year-old boy was struck by a float on St. Charles Avenue during the Krewe of Bacchus parade Sunday evening, and an officer trying to help to the boy broke his leg also, New Orleans police said.

The child was hit around 7:20 p.m. Sunday on St. Charles Avenue near Conery Street (a block from Washington Avenue) by a trailer that was part of a float, said NOPD Officer Garry Flot, a departmental spokesman. The child was taken to the hospital, and was “alert with bruising to the abdomen,” Flot said.

A NOPD officer responding to the incident slipped on beads and broke his leg, Flot said.

Bacchus was delayed for about 35 minutes, Flot said, and resumed around 7:55 p.m.
