New Orleans police seized a firearm in one gun case and reported two fighting incidents that warranted criminal investigations along the Uptown parade route in the first weekend of parading, according to NOPD crime maps.

The gun case — marked as illegal carrying of a firearm — was reported around 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the 1200 block of St. Charles (near Clio), while the krewes of Sparta and Pygmalion rolled, the crime maps show. The area around Erato and St. Charles has been a focus for law enforcement in recent years — at least eight guns were seized from the area in 2013, and in 2012, two people were injured when gunfire broke out in the Wendy’s parking lot there.

NOPD Sixth District Commander Bob Bardy said the area is the focus of high staffing levels this year, as well as assistance from the NOPD and Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office mounted patrols.

The other violent crimes reported on the parade route were two simple batteries, which can reflect a range of unwanted contact usually without a weapon. Bardy said the cases — both on Friday night of the krewes of Oshun and Cleopatra, one at 10 p.m. and one at 10:30 p.m. — were reports of fighting.

No other crimes of violence — armed attacks or robberies — were reported on the length of the Uptown parade route along Magazine, Napoleon and St. Charles during the weekend, according to the crime maps.
