nola vfwThe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8973 — located Uptown, just off Wisner Park — is collecting American flags that are no longer fit for public display and will give them a proper disposal ceremony at noon Saturday.

Flags can be dropped off at the post from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, until the ceremony begins, post member Marshall Hevron said in an email.

“One of the services the VFW provides the community is the proper disposal of American flags that have become unserviceable through wear and tear,” Hevron wrote. “VFW Post 8973 has been collecting worn and tattered flags for the last 6 months and we are going to hold a disposal ceremony on Saturday January 11, 2014 at noon. If anyone in the community has a worn flag they would like to dispose of, they can bring them by the VFW Hall, 531 Lyons St. from 10:00 to noon on the January 11th. If someone needs to arrange an alternative time, or if they have any questions, they can contact resources@nolavfw.org.”
