New Orleans police have released a man detained in connection with a fatal shooting Thursday on Calhoun Street, saying the incident was a “justifiable homicide” and forwarding the case to prosecutors for review.

The shooting took place around 11 a.m. Thursday, when a 40-year-old man and a woman described by police as his ex-girlfriend were arguing outside home near the intersection of Calhoun and Hewes streets. A 38-year-old man arrived and intervened, began struggling with the 40-year-old man, and shots rang out, leaving the 40-year-old ex-boyfriend dead, police said.

After questioning, homicide investigators deemed the shooting as “justifiable,” released the 38-year-old man, and forwarded the results of their investigation to the District Attorney’s Office.
