The preparation for installation of a new drainage canal under the Jefferson Avenue neutral ground will require closing both lanes of the road at Clara Street for two months starting on Monday, New Orleans officials announced.
Traffic will be detoured to Nashville Avenue, and local traffic will still have access, according to an email from Robert Jackson, spokesman for the Sewerage and Water Board.
The neutral ground has already been removed, and Jefferson Avenue will remain two-way on either side of Clara while workers move the underground utilities to the side of the street. When they shift to installation of the actual canal, however, only one lane will remain open, with traffic only allowed to head away from the river.
The entire $56 million segment from South Claiborne to Dryades is expected to be finished in 2017. The Jefferson Avenue project, concurrent projects on Napoleon and South Claiborne and an upcoming project on Louisiana Avenue are all intended to reduce street flooding from routine rain storms in the Uptown area.
