A New Orleans Police officer was shot in the leg Monday evening while on patrol in Central City, and police have a suspect in custody after a manhunt in the area, authorities said.
Two officers were patrolling near Third and LaSalle around 9 p.m. when they made eye contact with a man who started running, and as they began to engage him, he began shooting, hitting one officer in the leg, according to our partners at WWL-TV. The officers returned the fire, but the suspect did not stop, and he was later found by a police dog in the 2200 block of Third Street.
The man was not injured by gunfire but was taken to a hospital for treatment of dog bites, and the injured officer is expected to make a full recovery, said Officer Frank Robertson III, a departmental spokesman. Police have not released the names of either the officer or the suspect.
