The New Orleans Mission is hoping to raise $250,000 to increase the number of beds for homeless women from 16 to 38, officials announced Tuesday.
The Mission has already raised $50,000 of its $300,000 goal, and Gardner Realtors has signed on as a corporate partner, officials said. A fundraising luncheon will be held next Tuesday.
The project will convert administrative space in the New Orleans Mission building on Baronne Street into bedrooms, reports Mike Hoss of our partners at WWL-TV:

New Orleans Mission Announces Plan to Expand Women’s Center
GARDNER REALTORS steps up to launch fundraising efforts
New Orleans (October 29, 2013)— The New Orleans Mission with support from Gardner Realtors announced a plan to expand its women’s services during a press conference today, Oct. 29, held in the Mission’s garden area.
The New Orleans Mission plans to expand its Women’s Center to include 38 beds for women, a full-time women’s therapist and a safe place exclusively for women within its current facility on Baronne Street in Central City. With the expansion, the New Orleans Mission will be the largest shelter for women in the Greater New Orleans Area.
While overall homelessness in New Orleans is down, the rate of homeless women is up 66 percent since 2012. Currently, the New Orleans Mission offers 16 beds for women and painstakingly has to turn women away on a nightly basis due to lack of room.
“These women are the most vulnerable of our homeless population,” said David Bottner, executive director for the New Orleans Mission. “Of the homeless women in New Orleans, 92 percent have been abused sexually or physically. The problem is deeper than meets the eye, and it is our duty to help them.”
Gardner Realtors is teaming up with the New Orleans Mission to meet the $300,000 fundraising goal necessary for the Women’s Center expansion. To date, $50,000 has already been raised.
“It is the daily business of Gardner Realtors to help people find a place they love to call home, and it’s a natural fit that we want to help every woman in New Orleans have a place they love to call home,” said Glenn Gardner, president of operations for Gardner Realtors.
Members of the Gardner Real Estate Family contribute to the New Orleans Mission Women’s Center between now and the end of the year will receive a GARDNERLOVE Heart to place on their real estate signs to show their support.
“Showing GARDNERLOVE, which is our way of giving back, has been important to our business since it was first founded by my great grandmother, Gertrude Gardner,” said Crystal Gardner-Phillips, director of marketing for Gardner Realtors. “She was a big supporter of the local shelter My House when it was still operation. We’re honoring her legacy by teaming up with the New Orleans Mission.”
Fundraising efforts will continue at the New Orleans Mission “A New Life” luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Sheraton New Orleans. Tickets to the luncheon are available starting at $30. Sponsorships begin at $500.
