The man was shot around 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Eden and South Gayoso streets, according to a NOPD news release. He was found unresponsive on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the face, and despite emergency workers’ efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene, the release states.
The victim was Rakeem Holmes, the father of Keira Holmes, who herself was shot to death in the crossfire of a gun battle at the former B.W. Cooper development in 2011, according to Danielle Bell of the Times-Picayune. The shooting took place near a vigil for another slain family member, witnesses told the newspaper.
No information about a motive or suspects has been released. NOPD Homicide Detective Wayne Delarge is leading the investigation, and anyone with information is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 822-1111 to leave an anonymous tip that could be eligible for a cash reward.
