Shared Housing of New Orleans is a program to help elderly and/or disabled adults, who do not need to be in Nursing Homes, remain in their own homes by matching them with people looking for a place to live. All Shared Housing services are free, and we are seeking new referrals! Applicants are carefully interviewed and evaluated by experienced registered nurses; they also undergo a police check and, in some cases, a medical history.
Shared Housing is seeking new referrals for homeowners and ‘homeseekers.’ These ‘homeseekers’ provide light housekeeping and companionship to homeowners in exchange for room and board. Shared Housing carefully screens applicants, facilitates appropriate matches, then formalizes each match in a contract. Participants are responsible for their own personal needs; the program is not a substitute for home health care or personal care attendants. Our registered nurses do case management, and they will arrange for personal care when needed prior to moving a homeseeker in. Applicants participate fully in the selection of roommates. This is usually a transitional arrangement for the homeseeker; if necessary, we will have a new match for a homeowner when a homeseeker moves on to more independent living.
Advantages for both participants include companionship as well as security in sharing a household; dignity in knowing homesharing is neither an imposition nor a handout; and satisfaction in helping another while helping oneself. The advantages for the homeowner include: Assistance (the homeseeker helps with specified household activities) and security (in having a familiar, reliable person around, especially at night). Advantages for the homeseeker include: room & board and the opportunity to work (at least part-time) and save, or attend school or training.
