The 43-year-old victim got off the St. Charles Avenue streetcar at Louisiana Avenue and began walking toward Delachaise Street around 3:45 p.m. (Friday) Aug. 23 when he felt someone pulling on his backpack, NOPD Detective Virgil Landry reported during Wednesday’s meeting of the Sixth District ranking officers. He turned around and saw it was a stranger who then began striking at the victim, so the victim dropped the backpack and his assailant began to run off, Landry said.
The victim started chasing after him, and on Delachaise the robber turned to face the victim again and said “What?” Landry said. The victim thought the assailant was going to attack him again, so victim stopped short, and instead the robber dumped the contents of the backpack on the ground, Landry said. Most of what was inside was clothing and paperwork, however, so the robber ran off on Prytania Street and the victim recovered all of his belongings.
While he was running with the stolen backpack, however, the robber passed in front of a surveillance camera that caught an image of him, Landry said. Anyone with information as to his identity is urged to call Sixth District detectives at 658-6060.
