Mentally-challenged man missing from facility in Milan neighborhood

After a 24-year-old man described as mentally challenged jumped the fence Tuesday at a facility in the Milan neighborhood, police are seeking the public’s help finding him.

Derrick Garner, 24, was last seen by his caretaker leaving the Community Care Center in the 1400 block of General Taylor around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, wrote NOPD Officer Garry Flot in a news release. Garner still had not returned to the center as of Thursday afternoon, Flot said.

He is described as a 5-foot-8, 130-pound black man last seen wearing hospital scrubs, though no photograph was available. He is in need of medication, Flot wrote.
