A 21-year-old man was shot to death inside a car that then crashed into a home on Nelson Street just off South Claiborne, authorities said.
The victims’ silver Nissan Altima crashed into a home in the 8600 block of Nelson Street after being fired upon on nearby Monroe Street around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to a NOPD news release. A 21-year-old man was found dead inside the car, and a second victim with a single gunshot wound to the body was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition, authorities said.
The victim, identified as Gerald Antoine Johnson, was a welder recently laid off from Avondale Shipyard, family members told Naomi Martin of The Times-Picayune. His older sister is a Transportation Security Administration worker, and his older brother is a U.S. Navy officer, and the victim’s Altima had ferried both siblings to the airport Wednesday morning before it was filled with bullets that afternoon, Martin said.
