A 56-year-old mental patient barricaded herself, her daughter and two young grandchildren inside a Central City home Saturday afternoon, but surrendered peacefully to police after about two hours, authorities said.

The woman armed herself with a steak knife and what was later learned to be a toy gun around noon Saturday and barricaded herself inside a home in the 2900 block of Dryades Street with a 23-year-old daughter, a 5-year-old grandson and a 6-year-old granddaughter, said NOPD Officer Hilal Williams, a department spokeswoman. The SWAT team surrounded the house, and the woman released her daughter and the two children around 1 p.m., then surrendered to negotiators around 2 p.m., Williams said.

The woman — who was known to be mentally ill — was taken to the hospital afterward for a psychiatric evaluation, Williams said.
