A Tulane law student was robbed at gunpoint in front of his Plum Street home Wednesday night, authorities said.

The student was getting out of his car in front of his home in the 7500 block of Plum Street around 8:45 p.m. when a young man came running up from the corner, grabbed him by the neck with one hand and pulled out a gun with the other, demanding his belongings, the victim said afterward. The gunman saw his phone and demanded that, then demanded his wallet, then ran off on Hillary Street toward South Claiborne, said the victim, who is not being identified by Uptown Messenger.

Marks from the attack were still visible on the victim’s neck, but he said he was not otherwise hurt. The gunman was wearing a gray sweatshirt, gray pants and black shoes, and had a bandana or some kind of mask covering his face, the victim said.

“He looked scared, like he didn’t want to do it. He was obviously a young guy. He sounded young,” said the victim, a native New Orleanian who just moved to central Carrollton in August. “He didn’t put his finger on the trigger; he kept it on the side. I don’t think he wanted to shoot me. I just gave him what he wanted, and he left.”

Anyone with private surveillance cameras on the street in the area around Hillary between Plum and Claiborne is asked to review their footage for possible suspects, and anyone with information should call NOPD Second District detectives at 658-6020. To leave an anonymous tip that could be eligible for a cash reward, call CrimeStoppers at 822-1111.

  1. One of them will rob the wrong person, get shot and killed, and we will have to see “Justice for ______” signs everywhere, and calls for prosecution of the robbery victim.

  2. Wow, such details of the crime and the criminal. Was the victim able to get all details except the race of the criminal or is that just too PC to report?

So ANY man we see with “a gray sweatshirt, gray pants and black shoes” should be immediately be reported to the Second District NOPD as a potential armed robber?

  3. Keith and handoutnation: between them, they’ve said it all.

  4. Guess you can’t offend the robber by stating his race. What a joke.

  5. It says he had a mask on. Perhaps race wasn’t clear.

  6. Ok, this is scary I live in the 7500 block of Plum and I had no idea this happened, thank you for posting this. I think the NOPD needs to let neighbors know that something like this has happened on your block by putting flyers on doors.
