A woman was raped at gunpoint Monday morning after being forced from a Peniston Street sidewalk into an empty building, authorities said.

The 18-year-old woman was leaving her boyfriend’s apartment in the early hours of Jan. 7 on the 2600 block of Peniston Street, said Sgt. Ernie Crayton, in charge of persons crimes in the NOPD Second District. As she walked down the street she was approached from behind by a male with a gun who forced her to an abandoned residence on the block and sexually assaulted her, said Crayton.

“It was not a domestic case,” said Crayton during the district’s weekly meeting of ranking officers.

Officers with the city’s sex crimes unit are working with the victim to develop a computer sketch of the subject, said Crayton.

One Response to “Woman reportedly raped at gunpoint in the Milan neighborhood”

  1. Thank you for this post. It’s always good to know what’s happening locally.

One comment: I wish the headline didn’t say ” ‘reportedly’ raped,” for a crime that sounds well-substantiated and documented once you get to the full text. It feeds into the trend of treating news of rapes differently than other crimes. I don’t see “reportedly robbed” in the archives.
