After a 19-year-old barged into a west Carrollton home and shot a man inside, family members managed to detain the gunman until police arrived, authorities said.
Terrance Hampton, 19, entered the home in the 8800 block of Hickory around 5:25 p.m. and shot the 28-year-old victim in the chest, said Officer Garry Flot, a NOPD spokesman. The shooting victim was critically injured, and Hampton was also treated for minor injuries after the family members restrained him, Flot said.
Hampton will be charged with attempted murder, police said.
The home where the shooting took place is less than a block from James Weldon Johnson Elementary School. Principal Wanda Brooks and community leaders have been begging state officials for years for a new location, possibly the old Priestley site on Leonidas, because the frequency of deadly violence within sight of the school yard.
