Tulane sent members of the university community emails and text alerts about “reports of shots fired” and urging them to seek shelter Wednesday afternoon, but a few minutes later issued a statement that no shooting incident had taken place and that the messages were inadvertently sent during a test of a new system.

“We apologize for sending these messages and causing unnecessary stress and anxiety among the members of our community. We have this type of instant messaging technology to make our campuses safer, not cause undue alarm,” according to statement at emergency.tulane.edu. “We have already begun to review our procedures to ensure this does not happen again.”
