A 25-year-old was shot to death Thursday evening near the intersection of Philip and Magnolia streets, and police arrested an armed man fleeing the scene moments later and charged him with murder, authorities said.

Gunfire rang out in the area at 6:38 p.m., and officers already on patrol nearby headed to the intersection and saw a man running away on Magnolia Street, NOPD public information officer Garry Flot said in a news release. The man headed onto First Street, then South Robertson, where he attempted to throw a gun over a fence, police said. The gun bounced off the fence, and one officer stayed with it while the other kept chasing the suspect until catching up to him in a backyard in the 2600 block of First Street, Flot wrote. He was then identified as 21-year-old Lorenza Conner, police said.

The victim had been shot several times and was pronounced dead on the scene where the officers found him.

Conner was charged with second-degree murder, and had a previous record of several drug arrests and other assorted charges.
